Vatican City, May 16, 2025 - Pope Leo XIV has offered the Vatican as a venue for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, following the collapse of negotiations in Istanbul. The offer, conveyed by Cardinal Parolin, underscores the Holy See's commitment to facilitating dialogue to end the ongoing conflict.
Cardinal Parolin stated the Vatican's readiness to host a meeting between the two parties to foster a peaceful resolution. He lamented the failure of the Istanbul talks, describing the situation as "tragic". Pope Leo XIV, elected last week, has prioritized working towards peace in Ukraine.
The Pope's offer comes as he is set to meet with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on Sunday, May 18, during the inaugural mass. Discussions are expected to include international crises, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war. Pope Leo XIV has already engaged with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressing solidarity and calling for the release of prisoners and the return of children to their families.
