Kinshasa, May 15, 2025 – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) successfully facilitated the safe transport of 1,359 disarmed members of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government forces and their families from Goma to Kinshasa between April 30 and May 15. This operation occurred amidst the ongoing conflict in the region, highlighting the critical role of neutral intermediaries in protecting vulnerable populations.

Acting as a neutral intermediary, the ICRC coordinated the complex operation, which involved crossing conflict zones. The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in DRC (MONUSCO) and the DRC's armed forces provided transport support. The ICRC ensured that all individuals consented to the transport, coordinating closely with the DRC's Ministry of Defence, MONUSCO, and the Congo Alliance River/M23 Movement (AFC/M23).

The ICRC's intervention underscores its commitment to promoting respect for international humanitarian law and protecting those affected by armed conflicts in the DRC. The organization has been present in the DRC since 1978, providing essential protection and assistance to victims of armed conflicts and other violence.
