Libya Ceasefire Announced in Tripoli After Intense Clashes in May 2025

On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU) declared a ceasefire in Tripoli following intense clashes between rival militias. The Ministry of Defense announced that regular forces, in coordination with security authorities, have begun deploying neutral units to restore order.

The announcement brought relative calm, though clashes were reported between Brigade 444 and the Special Deterrence Force (Rada). These clashes followed the killing of Abdel-Ghani al Kikli, commander of the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA), by a rival militia.

The UN mission for Libya (UNSMIL) expressed deep concern over the violence and called for an immediate ceasefire. UNSMIL also demanded the establishment of safe corridors for civilians trapped in conflict zones. The mission warned that attacks on civilian infrastructure and harm to civilians may constitute crimes under international law.
