The International Court of Justice (ICJ) commenced public hearings in The Hague on Monday, April 28, 2025, to examine Israel's obligations concerning its policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territory. This follows a request from the UN General Assembly for an advisory opinion on Israel's legal responsibilities, particularly regarding the rights of Palestinians.
Representatives from 40 countries and four international organizations are expected to present oral submissions during the proceedings. The UN seeks clarification on Israel's obligations towards the UN, its agencies, international organizations, and third-party states to ensure the unhindered provision of urgently needed supplies essential for the survival of the Palestinian civilian population.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Sa'ar stated that Israel will not attend the oral proceedings, calling it a “shameful proceeding against Israel.” He accused the UN of becoming an anti-Israel body and UNRWA as being infiltrated by terrorism. Sa'ar also criticized the ICJ, claiming the court is acting in a politically motivated manner to undermine Israel's right to defend itself.
