European Parliament Leaders Welcome Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release

On January 22, 2025, leaders of the European Parliament expressed their support for the recent ceasefire in Gaza, which signifies progress towards the gradual release of hostages. This development aims to alleviate the suffering experienced by civilians on both sides in recent months.

The leaders reiterated their deep sorrow for the innocent victims resulting from the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. They commended the mediation efforts of the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, which were pivotal in achieving this significant breakthrough.

They emphasized the importance of adhering to all commitments made under the agreement, ensuring the release of all hostages, and establishing a sustainable cessation of violence. All parties must fully commit to their obligations and prioritize civilian protection. European and international actors are urged to closely monitor the ceasefire implementation and hold accountable those who do not comply.

The release of the first hostages, including Emily Damari, Doron Steinbrecher, and Romi Gonen, marks an emotional milestone after 15 months of captivity. Their return brings immense relief to their families, although many others continue to endure the anxiety of waiting or mourning.

The leaders reiterated the call for the immediate release of all remaining hostages and stressed the necessity of providing urgent humanitarian assistance while they remain captive.

They underscored the significance of unrestricted humanitarian access to ensure aid reaches those in greatest need. All UN agencies operating in the region must be fully supported in their efforts to assist displaced individuals and facilitate their safe return home. Following the attacks, the area, including Lebanon, has witnessed widespread violence and destruction, with civilians, particularly women and children, bearing the brunt of the impact.

They demanded an immediate end to all hostilities, reaffirming that all actions must comply with international humanitarian law. There must be accountability for violations and justice for all victims. The European Parliament remains committed to a negotiated two-state solution, viewed as the most sustainable path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

All parties are called upon to renew efforts to remove barriers to this solution and engage in dialogue aimed at achieving mutual understanding and respect. Let this ceasefire serve as an opportunity to chart a new course towards a peaceful and just future for all people in the region, with the European Parliament continuing to play its role in promoting understanding and reconciliation.
