On May 19, 2025, Donald Trump initiated a phone call with Vladimir Putin to discuss the resolution of the war in Ukraine, according to reports from various news outlets. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump's goal is to "achieve an end to this conflict," adding that the American leader "urges and encourages both sides".

The call between Trump and Putin occurred after discussions between the Kremlin and the White House, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy communicated with "United News", referencing sources. The Kremlin indicated that the dialogue would consider the outcomes of the Istanbul meeting.

U.S. Vice President James David Vance has highlighted the prospects of negotiations, encouraged by the White House, to end the war. Vance noted in discussions with journalists, "We recognize that we are in a stalemate situation here." He also met with Pope Leo XIV to discuss negotiations aimed at resolving international conflicts, particularly in Ukraine.
