Serbia Faces Ongoing Protests Amidst Political Crisis

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

As of June 28, 2025, Serbia is experiencing continued widespread anti-corruption protests. These demonstrations are challenging the administration of President Aleksandar Vučić.

The protests were triggered by the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, which resulted in 16 deaths. The disaster is attributed to government corruption and negligence, particularly involving Chinese state companies.

Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigned in January 2025 due to the escalating protests. Protesters demand accountability and systemic reforms. A massive rally in Belgrade in March 2025 drew between 275,000 and 325,000 participants.

The Serbian government faces criticism for its response, with accusations of authoritarianism. Authorities have arrested individuals, intensifying tensions. International observers urge respect for democratic freedoms.
