Serbia: Student Protests Persist, Demanding Snap Elections

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

In Serbia, student-led protests continue to demand snap parliamentary elections. These protests are fueled by widespread anti-corruption sentiment and the tragic collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, which resulted in 16 fatalities.

The movement, organized by "Students in Blockade," has been marked by daily traffic blockades and large-scale demonstrations. A significant protest in Belgrade on March 15, 2025, drew over 350,000 participants, marking a historic event in Serbia's post-Yugoslav history.

Despite the resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević in January 2025 and the appointment of Đuro Macut, protests persist. Students and citizens are demanding accountability for the Novi Sad tragedy and broader anti-corruption reforms, impacting Serbia's European Union aspirations.
