Dalai Lama Announces Succession Plans, Challenging China's Authority

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

The Dalai Lama said on Wednesday that the non-profit organization he established has the sole right to determine who will succeed him after his death. In doing so, the Dalai Lama refuted claims by China that the government in Beijing would choose the successor to the Tibetan Buddhist leader.

The announcement was made during a religious gathering, where the Dalai Lama addressed thousands of Buddhist followers. He emphasized that the Trust should consult with Tibetan Buddhist traditions and Dharma Protectors.

The announcement comes before the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday on July 6, 2025. This move is seen as a strategic effort to ensure the continuity of the Dalai Lama institution and prevent external interference, particularly from China.
