Eu Aims to End Reliance on Russian Energy by 2027

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

The European Union aims to eliminate its dependence on Russian energy imports by May. This statement was made by EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. This goal is set against the backdrop of ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. According to Jorgensen, new supply agreements with alternative partners will be crucial. Existing contracts will be phased out by the end of 2025. The EU Commission presented a plan for complete independence from Russian fossil fuels by 2027. This plan, named REPowerEU, includes legislative changes at the EU level. It also requires member states to update their national plans by the end of 2025. Currently, Russian gas accounts for 13% of the EU's total gas market, compared to 45% before the war in Ukraine.
