Hungary To Maintain Energy Ties With Russia Despite EU Sanctions

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On June 19, 2025, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed that Hungary will continue to receive gas and oil supplies from Russia. This announcement followed meetings with Russian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

Hungary intends to maintain its energy cooperation with Russia, despite the European Commission's plan to eliminate Russian gas and LNG imports by the end of 2027. Szijjarto emphasized that oil deliveries and gas flows through the TurkStream pipeline will persist, and the Paks II nuclear project is progressing as planned.

The EU's proposal includes a phased ban on Russian gas and LNG imports to reduce reliance on Russian fossil fuels. Hungary and Slovakia have expressed strong objections, citing concerns over energy security and potential economic impacts. Hungary has a long-term gas supply agreement with Gazprom.
