Portuguese Government Collapses After Losing Confidence Vote, Early Elections Loom

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's center-right government fell after losing a confidence vote in parliament on Tuesday. The vote, which concluded with 142 votes against and 88 in favor, effectively ousted Montenegro's administration after just 11 months. The minority government consisted of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the CDS-People's Party (CDS-PP).

Portugal now faces the prospect of early elections for the third time in three years. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa may dissolve the assembly and schedule a new parliamentary vote, potentially as early as mid-May.
