UN Expert: Nicaragua Moving Towards Complete Dictatorship Under Ortega

Reed Brody, a member of the UN Human Rights Experts Group on Nicaragua (GHREN), stated on March 3, 2025, that the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo is progressing towards a "complete dictatorship." Brody criticized the constitutional reform that eliminated the division of powers, likening it to that of an absolute monarchy. He highlighted the suppression of dissenting voices, NGOs, and independent press. Brody also noted Nicaragua's unique practice of arbitrarily depriving individuals of nationality for political reasons. The UN group hopes for justice through universal jurisdiction or the International Court of Justice regarding human rights violations.
