Edited by: Ainet

Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, was officially inaugurated in Vatican City on May 18, 2025. The inaugural Mass took place in St. Peter's Square, attended by tens of thousands, including presidents and dignitaries.

The ceremony blended ancient rituals with modern elements, including a popemobile tour through the piazza. Security was tight, with numerous officials and pilgrims present. The Mass, which began at 10:00 local time (09:00 BST), saw world and religious leaders congregate at the Vatican to mark the start of Leo's papacy.

US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended, along with other world leaders. Pope Leo XIV received the pallium and the fisherman's ring, symbols of his papacy, during the Mass. The liturgy marked the official beginning of his ministry as successor of Peter and bishop of Rome.
