US consumer confidence falls to 12-year low

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

Americans have become markedly more pessimistic in their assessment of the economy. In September, the Conference Board's consumer confidence index fell to 81,9 points — its lowest reading since April 2014.

Compared with August, the indicator dropped by 6,7 points. That is even lower than the minimum levels recorded during the pandemic.

The assessment of the current situation worsened by 7,9 points and stood at 109,3. Short-term expectations fell by 5,9 points — to 63,6.

The main reasons are the persistently high level of prices and stagnant wages amid the ongoing war with Iran. People increasingly note that their financial situation is not improving.

The Conference Board data published on Tuesday reflect widespread discontent. Both the current situation and the outlook for the coming months are causing respondents growing anxiety.

How long will such uncertainty influence the everyday decisions of American families?
