A truly rare miracle has occurred in Australia: a woman has given birth to four identical (monozygotic) quadruplet girls. These are the first naturally conceived monozygotic quadruplets in the country's history. The girls were born healthy, and doctors are calling it a true medical phenomenon.
The girls were born on July 14, 2026, at 28 weeks and 4 days gestation, and are currently in the neonatal intensive care unit at Brisbane's Royal Women's Hospital. Why is this case so rare?
Identical twins usually occur when a single fertilized egg splits into two embryos. In this case, a single egg divided in such a way that four genetically almost identical girls were formed.
All four children also developed with a single shared placenta, which made the pregnancy even more unusual and significantly increased the risk of complications. The probability of naturally conceiving identical quadruplets is estimated to be approximately one in 15 million pregnancies.
Pregnancy under constant observation
The expectant mother began to be closely monitored from the tenth week of pregnancy. At 25 weeks, she was hospitalized so that doctors could constantly monitor the condition of the woman and the babies.
The girls were born via Cesarean section at 28 weeks and 4 days gestation. Despite their premature arrival, the birth proceeded with minimal complications.
