US President Donald Trump has announced work on a major deal to import potash fertilizers from Belarus, despite Minsk's status as Russia's strategic ally and continued international criticism of the Belarusian authorities. According to the American leader, purchasing Belarusian potash will cost Washington substantially less than current supplies from Canada.
Details of the Statement In his social media post, Donald Trump emphasized that the cost of potash fertilizers from Belarus will be significantly lower than the sum the US currently pays Canada. Potash salt is a key component in the production of agricultural fertilizers, which are critically important for increasing crop yields. This statement was part of a series of steps by the administration to optimize costs for the American agricultural sector and to review traditional raw material supply chains.
Economic Context To date, Canada is the main supplier of potash fertilizers for American farmers, providing the overwhelming majority of US imports of this raw material. According to data from relevant agencies, in 2025 the volume of potash imports from Canada to the US amounted to about 4,2 billion dollars.
Despite the fact that Canadian potash is still exempt from import duties, trade and economic relations between the countries remain tense. Earlier this year, the US imposed high tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, to which Ottawa responded with symmetrical countermeasures against American goods worth tens of billions of dollars, affecting the agricultural, metallurgical and electronics sectors.
Geopolitical Background and Terms of the Deal Belarus has historically been among the world's largest producers and exporters of potash. However, its exports face serious restrictions: the European Union previously imposed a complete ban on imports of Belarusian potash fertilizers and froze the assets of the state producer Belaruskali.
According to reports, the current negotiations between Washington and Minsk are being conducted with the mediation of a US special envoy. As part of the agreements reached, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned hundreds of political prisoners, which became a preliminary condition for easing American sanctions against Belarusian companies, including the potash industry.
Consequences and Prospects A potential reorientation of the US toward Belarusian potash could have a significant impact on the global fertilizer market.
