The Mars Curiosity Rover has detected complex organic molecules, including decane, undecane, and dodecane, within a rock sample from Yellowknife Bay in Gale Crater. These carbon-rich molecules, resembling fragments of fatty acids, are key components of lipids found in living cells. The discovery suggests that Yellowknife Bay was once an ancient lake with conditions conducive to preserving organic molecules. While not definitive proof of past life, the presence of these molecules indicates that Mars possessed the necessary chemical ingredients for life's formation. The findings support the possibility of detecting chemical signatures of past life in future Mars sample analyses and highlight the potential for larger, life-indicating organic molecules to still exist on Mars.
