ISA Meeting in Brussels: Solar Energy Focus

Edited by: an_lymons vilart

Brussels, Belgium, June 12, 2025: The Sixth Meeting of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Regional Committee for Europe and the Others Region convened. The meeting, chaired by Germany, brought together 20 countries to review progress and advance collaborative action. Director General of ISA, Ashish Khanna, highlighted that nearly $2 trillion was invested in clean energy last fiscal year, with solar leading the way. However, only 15% of these investments reach low- and middle-income countries. Less than 2% goes to Africa, a region with significant solar potential. Tobias Rinke, Deputy Head of Division, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany, reaffirmed the commitment to solar energy. He emphasized the global consensus reached at COP28 to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. Solar energy is crucial for achieving these goals, enhancing energy security, and driving economic growth. Laura Cozzi, Director of Sustainability, Technology, and Outlooks at the International Energy Agency (IEA), discussed the impact of AI on energy systems. AI is increasing electricity demand, but it also offers solutions for grid management and solar deployment. AI-related infrastructure could add electricity demand equivalent to a 'new Japan' by 2030. Kate Hampton, CEO of the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), discussed the role of philanthropy in climate finance. She emphasized the need for catalytic equity to mobilize private investment in solar deployment. She also highlighted the importance of skilled professionals in navigating the complexities of delivery, policy, and finance. H.E. Dan Jørgensen, Commissioner for Energy and Housing at the European Commission, highlighted solar energy's role in reducing fossil fuel dependency and lowering emissions. The cost of solar power has fallen by 82% over the past decade, making it the most affordable clean energy source.
