June 9, 2025, Turkey - Chinese solar cell manufacturer Drinda and Turkey's Schmid Pekintas Energy have announced a joint venture to construct a 5 GW n-type solar cell facility.
The project will be implemented in phases, with the first phase targeting 2 GW of capacity. Drinda will provide the solar cell technologies and production processes, while Schmid Pekintas will manage construction and staffing.
Turkey currently has 15 GW of module capacity but less than 2 GW of solar cell capacity. The partnership aims to address this imbalance and establish a high-efficiency cell hub serving Turkey, Europe, and the Middle East.
The facility will leverage Turkey's zero-tariff access to the EU and strong solar potential, averaging over 1,500 kWh/m² annually. This aligns with the country's 2035 energy roadmap, which forecasts 7 GW to 8 GW of new solar capacity added annually.
