June 16, 2025, Hangzhou, China - Yadea, a Chinese two-wheeler manufacturer, is promoting sodium-ion battery technology for electric mopeds, with fast-charging capabilities (0-80% in 15 minutes) and battery-swapping stations.
China is rapidly developing sodium-ion battery technology to reduce dependence on lithium and raw materials. Grid operators are also building energy storage stations using sodium-ion batteries.
Sodium-ion batteries are being adopted in two-wheelers due to shorter distances and lower energy demands. They are also being used in energy storage stations, which is expected to be a rapidly growing market.
China's Guangxi province has launched an energy storage station powered by sodium-ion batteries, capable of holding 10 megawatt-hours of power. The country plans to build numerous sodium-ion battery plants, with a projected global capacity exceeding 500 GWh by 2033, with China accounting for over 90%.
The main advantage of sodium-ion batteries is the abundance of sodium, making them potentially cheaper and safer than lithium-ion batteries. Chinese companies are investing heavily in R&D, aiming to lead global production.
