June 11, 2025, China - The State Grid Corporation of China announced the operation of an ±800 kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) direct current transmission project.

This project links Xinjiang's Hami with Chongqing, spanning 2,260 kilometers. It will transmit over 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, with more than half from new energy sources.

The UHV line is expected to save approximately 6 million tonnes of coal and reduce about 16 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Xinjiang's renewable energy capacity reached 112 million kilowatts by the end of 2024.

Transmitting 100 million kilowatts of photovoltaic power from Xinjiang could reduce thermal power installations by 25 million kilowatts in eastern and central China. This project supports China's goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
