China is making strides in renewable energy, with over 200 million kilowatts of new renewable energy capacity installed in the first three quarters of 2024, accounting for over 80% of total new capacity. In 2023, China contributed 60% of the world's new renewable capacity. Clean energy accounted for 39.7% of China's total power generation in 2023, a 15% increase from 2013. China's CO2 emissions per unit of GDP decreased by 50.9% in 2021 compared to 2005. Forest coverage reached 25% by 2023, with a carbon-sink capacity exceeding 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalents. The government aims for a 3% reduction in energy consumption per unit of GDP by 2025 and is constructing new energy bases in arid regions and offshore wind farms. Zero-carbon industrial parks and expanded carbon emission trading are also planned. Solar and wind energy saw increases of 278 million kW and 79.82 million kW respectively in 2024, pushing renewable energy capacity to 56% of the national total. China has cut CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by over 35% between 2012 and 2023.
