India's First Digital Nomad Village Opens in Sikkim

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

In June 2025, Yakten, a serene village in East Sikkim, was officially designated as India's first digital nomad village. This initiative aims to provide remote workers, freelancers, and digital entrepreneurs with a harmonious blend of productivity and tranquility amidst the Himalayan landscape.

Yakten is situated approximately 33 kilometers from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, and about 10 kilometers from the newly operational Pakyong Airport. The village is accessible via road from Gangtok, and the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, approximately 115 kilometers away.

The Sikkim government, with assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has developed Yakten to cater to the needs of digital nomads. The village offers high-speed internet, eco-friendly homestays, and modern co-working spaces. Local homestays provide comfortable accommodations equipped with essential amenities, including electricity and attached bathrooms.

Surrounded by lush alpine forests and offering panoramic views of Mount Kanchenjunga, Yakten is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The village is known for its rich biodiversity, including rare Himalayan orchids and a variety of bird species. Activities such as nature walks, bird watching, and treks to nearby viewpoints like Jhandi Dara and Budaang Gadi are popular among visitors.

Yakten's homestays are primarily run by local Buddhist and Limboo families, offering guests an authentic cultural experience. Visitors can enjoy home-cooked meals prepared with locally sourced, organic ingredients, providing a taste of traditional Sikkimese cuisine.

The establishment of Yakten as a digital nomad village is expected to boost sustainable tourism and support the local community by attracting remote workers seeking a balance between work and nature. The initiative also aims to promote eco-friendly travel and provide opportunities for cross-cultural interaction and mutual learning.

For those interested in experiencing a unique blend of work and leisure in a tranquil setting, Yakten offers an ideal destination.
