Microsoft Edge is experimenting with bringing back its Secure Network hub, currently being tested in the Canary channel. This feature offers users a free VPN (via Microsoft Account) to protect their IP address and keep their location private while browsing. The Secure Network hub, accessible through a toolbar button, aims to simplify access to this privacy feature.
Originally tested in 2022, the Secure Network hub was later integrated into Browser Essentials. Its reintroduction reflects the increasing demand for online security. Edge's VPN, powered by Cloudflare, encrypts user IP addresses, preventing ISPs from monitoring browsing activity and allowing access to sites with expired HTTPS certificates.
While it doesn't spoof geolocation like traditional VPNs, it enhances privacy by masking the user's actual IP address. Microsoft seems to be promoting Secure Network as a free VPN to attract more users, even though it primarily functions as a security and privacy solution.
