Microsoft to Discontinue Remote Desktop App in 2025, Recommends Transition to New Windows App for Virtual Desktop Connections

Microsoft will discontinue support for the Remote Desktop app via Microsoft Store starting May 27, 2025. Users connecting to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box should migrate to the new Windows app, officially launched in September 2024.

  • The new Windows app serves as a unified gateway for Azure virtual desktops, Windows 365 cloud PCs, Remote Desktop Services, and Microsoft Dev Box.

  • It is compatible with PCs, tablets, smartphones, and web browsers.

  • Current limitations include lack of support for Remote Desktop Services and remote PC connections on Windows, available on macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, and Chrome OS.

  • Microsoft suggests using Remote Desktop Connection or RemoteApp until these features are integrated.

The transition aims to streamline user experience and consolidate virtualization platforms, though some users may face initial challenges due to unsupported features.
