Luxembourg Launches MeluXina-Q Quantum Computer

Luxembourg has unveiled the MeluXina-Q quantum computer, a significant advancement in next-generation digital technologies. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of the Economy and the Ministry for Research, aims to solidify Luxembourg's position in the quantum computing landscape.

The MeluXina-Q will be hosted by LuxProvide, enhancing the capabilities of the existing MeluXina supercomputer. Initially equipped with a 10-qubit quantum processing unit (QPU) made from silicon, it promises a secure and scalable supply chain within the EU. The system is designed to evolve to a total capacity of 80 qubits.

This quantum computer is expected to support various applications, including scientific research and industrial challenges, particularly in fields like chemistry, personalized medicine, and artificial intelligence. The project, co-financed by EuroHPC JU and the Digital Europe Programme, has a total investment of €8.5 million.

Minister Delles emphasized the strategic importance of this development for Luxembourg's digital strategy, while Minister Obertin noted the existing skill set in quantum physics within the country. The initiative is seen as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration in quantum technology across Europe.
