Matty Lee Announces Retirement from Diving After Two Decades, Citing Personal Loss and Physical Toll

Olympic gold medalist Matty Lee has declared his retirement from diving after a 20-year career. Lee, who partnered with Tom Daley to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics, cited personal reasons and physical challenges as factors in his decision. The loss of his father in 2022 significantly impacted his passion for the sport. Subsequent injuries and surgeries further influenced his choice, as he expressed a desire to avoid long-term physical damage. Lee achieved considerable success throughout his career. He secured Commonwealth gold and World Aquatics Championships silver alongside Noah Williams in 2022. With Daley, he earned World Cup and European gold in 2021, and a bronze at the 2019 World Championships. Lee also won individual gold at the European Games in 2015 and silver medals at the 2017 World Championships and 2018 European Championships with Lois Toulson. Lee expressed gratitude for his experiences in diving, highlighting the people he met, the places he traveled, and the memories he made. He thanked his family, coaching team, and Daley for their support. While uncertain about his future, Lee stated his readiness to explore life beyond diving.
