Xu Yang Sets New Drone Speed Record for Guinness

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

Xu Yang, a student from China, has achieved a new Guinness World Record for drone speed. The micro drone reached a speed of 340.78 km/h. This significantly surpasses the previous record of 219 km/h.

Yang received guidance from aviation model experts and record holders. He independently developed the propellers, body, and electronics of the drone. The body, resembling a rocket, has a thickness of only 0.4 mm. It is made of carbon fiber, ensuring excellent structural strength.

The official record was set on March 23, 2025. The self-made quadcopter, weighing 480 grams, reached the speed. With a tailwind, the speed reached 358 km/h. Interestingly, calculated models predicted the drone could only reach 320 km/h. Practical testing exceeded expectations.

Previously, similar speeds were only demonstrated by heavier drones weighing 500 to 1000 grams. The Chinese student managed to achieve this level with a significantly lighter device. Ingenuity and a bit of daring helped in this endeavor.

For example, before launching the drone, he heated the batteries to 40°C to increase performance. This is not recommended in everyday conditions, as it can lead to battery explosion. It is possible that a new record will be set in the near future, as the pursuit of new achievements is difficult to contain.
