The music begins — and every body finds its own answer.
Someone catches the rhythm with their shoulders. Someone takes a first step, closes their eyes, or smiles at the person next to them. The movements differ, but the space gradually fills with a shared pulse.
This is exactly the kind of encounter Yaeji invites us to hear in her new single ddr, released on 2 November 2026 on XL Recordings. The track was made together with producers Enayet and K Wata and comes with a video directed by Giseong Jun.
What could the world we choose look like?
At the heart of the song is a question that came to Yaeji during one of her nighttime walks through New York: what does the reality we would like to live in look like?
She finds the answer in dancing together. In one place gather people with different stories, sensations, and ways of moving. Each person goes through their own journey to the music while sharing the space with others.
For the artist, quite concrete expressions of care matter: accessible water, respect for personal boundaries, the ability to dance without harassment. Her vision of a desirable world is built from how people treat one another here and now.
Thus the big question takes on a human scale. A space of freedom begins with the place we leave for another.
A rhythm that invites play
The title ddr refers to Dance Dance Revolution — a game in which the participant follows the musical rhythm by stepping on marked sections of a dance platform.
In the new track, this game imagery meets the influence of Chicago footwork. Its intricate rhythmic patterns create a fluid musical environment, while the video connects dance with the visual language of arcade culture.
There is a joy of discovery in this combination. The music offers an impulse, and the body tries to answer. You can notice a new detail, change your step, laugh at your own unexpected find.
Dance becomes a way to reveal what is still hard to put into words.
From the music video to a real-life encounter
The story is set to continue on 6 November at the Paragon club in Brooklyn. The evening's lineup, featuring Yaeji, DJ Swisha, OSSX, Lil C and DJ Noir, also includes an encounter with a real DDR dance machine loaded with the artist's music.
According to the organizer's announcement, the gaming part will take place before the nighttime club program. At the time of publication, the event is still ahead.
The idea of the song takes on a physical form: people will be able to gather, play, hear the music and bring their own movement to the evening.
The freedom to be yourself alongside others
In the concept of ddr what is especially appealing is the possibility of connecting the personal and the shared.
To share a dance, people need only hear the rhythm and feel the space around them. They do not have to match in everything: one moves expansively, another almost imperceptibly; someone steps into the center, someone stays at the edge.
Such a dance floor can be seen as an image of a community in which attention to oneself is combined with attention to those around. One's own freedom becomes fuller when there is also room nearby for a free person.
This is an artistic reading of Yaeji's idea. The song invites us to imagine such an encounter — and, perhaps, to bring its mood into everyday life.
What has this music added to the sound of the planet?
The joy of shared presence.
Everyone has their own step, their own tempo of unfolding, a unique pattern of movement. Meeting one another, they create a living composition that cannot be performed in advance on everyone's behalf.
The music sets the pulse. Each person brings their own unique sound. And the whole reveals itself where we hear one another, value freedom and respect everyone's choice — leaving space for one's own rhythm, movement and self-expression.
