Natalie Imbruglia's 1997 hit, 'Torn,' continues to captivate audiences, remaining a staple on the radio and a quintessential '90s anthem. Its enduring appeal is highlighted by recent covers, including a notable rendition by Portland-based rock trio Weakened Friends, released in March 2025.

Weakened Friends Reimagine 'Torn'

Weakened Friends' cover infuses the iconic song with a fresh, energetic sound. Sonia Sturino's vocals and guitar, Annie Hoffman's bass, and Adam Hand's drums create a unique interpretation that pays homage to the original while establishing its own identity. The band is scheduled to perform at the Back Cove Music & Arts Festival in August 2025.

'Torn': A Song with Many Lives

Originally written in 1991 by Scott Cutler and Anne Preven, 'Torn' has had multiple iterations. Danish singer Lis Sørensen first recorded it in Danish in 1993, followed by Ednaswap (Cutler and Preven's band) in 1995. Trine Rein, an American-Norwegian singer, also released a version in 1996. Imbruglia's 1997 version became a global hit, solidifying its place in pop culture.
