Science fiction is a huge genre: from space operas and time travel to virtual worlds and philosophical stories about man. Therefore, we did not try to collect just the most famous films, but chose one bright representative of each direction — those pictures that, in our opinion, best express their genre.
1. Immortals: War of the Worlds (2004)

This is an epic canvas where ancient myths about immortal beings collide with futuristic technologies in a large-scale intergalactic war. Completely unlike anything else, science fiction where futuristic Paris, ancient Egyptian gods and human destiny exist in one surreal world. This film does not so much tell a story as immerse you in a special universe — cold, beautiful, philosophical and truly unforgettable. Visual delight and deep philosophy of life and death make this film an absolute masterpiece that sets a new bar for the genre.
2. Star Warriors (Star Wars)

The legendary space opera that forever changed the industry, giving us a whole universe of Jedi, Sith and the mysterious Force. This is not just an adventure in a galaxy far, far away, but an eternal fairy tale about the struggle of light and darkness, which became the foundation for all modern pop culture. Perhaps the main space fairy tale in the history of cinema: heroes, empires, incredible worlds, lightsabers and the eternal struggle of light and darkness. "Star Wars" has long ceased to be just films — it is an independent mythology on which several generations of viewers have grown up.
3. The Matrix (The Matrix)

A revolutionary cyberpunk that made humanity doubt the reality of the surrounding world and gave cinema the legendary "bullet time". Deep philosophical subtext, stylish aesthetics and innovative fight scenes turned this story about the chosen one into a cult manifesto of a whole generation. A film after which reality can no longer be perceived as calmly as before. "The Matrix" combined philosophy, cyberpunk, action and the idea of an artificial world so precisely that many of its questions sound even more relevant today than at the time of release.
4. Edge of Tomorrow (Edge of Tomorrow, 2014)

In essence, this is "Groundhog Day", only in a science fiction action movie, which transports us to the brutal and dynamic realities of a fantastic alien invasion. The protagonist relives the same day over and over, each time trying to change the course of the war with the alien enemy. The great idea of a time loop is combined here with humor, action and excellent pacing — so the film can be rewatched again and again, which is especially symbolic in its case.
5. Interstellar (Interstellar, 2014)

A grand and touching odyssey about the search for a new home for humanity, where the laws of physics and the relativity of time become the main obstacles on the path to salvation. Christopher Nolan masterfully interweaves the cold beauty of space with a poignant story about the power of love, capable of overcoming any distance. Christopher Nolan turned a journey through space into a story not so much about stars, but about time, love, choice, and the impossibility of letting go of those dear to you. This is grand, beautiful, and emotional science fiction, after which you want to look at the sky for a long time and be a little silent.
We deliberately did not include in the rating many obvious masterpieces: "Avatar", "Dune", "Inception" by Christopher Nolan, "Harry Potter", "Back to the Future", "The Terminator", "X-Men", "Arrival" and dozens of other great science fiction films. The reason is simple: it is impossible to fit all the best science fiction into a top five. Therefore, we chose one film from different directions of the genre — from surreal science fiction and space opera to virtual reality, time loops, and grand space epic.
And yes, this list is completely subjective. But that is exactly why we like it. Instead of competing in popularity, we decided to highlight one benchmark representative from each subgenre, creating an ideal and balanced TOP according to Gaya.
Science fiction is a boundless cosmos of ideas, and choosing only five films from it is incredibly difficult. This approach allowed us to cover the most diverse facets of science fiction: from mythological epic and space sagas to cyberpunk, time loops, and hard science fiction.
