In recent years, cinema has been strikingly stingy with truly alive, breathing stories about love and passion. So if you missed the film “The Idea of You” (Мысль о тебе), we strongly advise you to fill that gap. It is a rare diamond amid a scattering of formulaic melodramas: the film is at once bold, uninhibited and impeccably staged, with a brilliant, witty script that holds your attention no worse than a gripping thriller.
A love you believe in
At the center of the story is Solène Marchand, a 40-year-old successful owner of an art gallery, a divorced woman and the mother of a teenage daughter.
Her life is quite settled, though it has long been missing something truly vivid.
Everything changes when Solène unexpectedly meets Hayes Campbell, a 24-year-old lead singer of the popular music group August Moon.
And between them arises an attraction that is hard to explain by ordinary logic.
The age difference, utterly different worlds, public opinion, Hayes's fame and the intense attention of fans — it would seem that absolutely everything should stand in the way of this relationship.
But that is precisely where the most interesting part begins.
The film does not simply tell the story of an unusual romance. It shows how genuine passion is gradually born, how it changes people and how hard it can be to resist one's own feelings.
And it does so with astonishing naturalness.
Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine — magnificent chemistry!
The lead roles were played by Anne Hathaway (1; 2) and Nicholas Galitzine (1; 2) , and it is precisely their duet that became the film's chief asset.
Anne Hathaway is incredibly good here.
Her Solène is not the naive heroine of yet another romantic fairy tale, but a grown, accomplished woman with her own principles, experience, fears and desires.
She knows how to be restrained and level-headed, yet at the same time she has by no means lost the ability to love, to feel and to lose her head.
And Hathaway conveys this inner contradiction beautifully.
Nicholas Galitzine, for his part, proved a wonderful partner. His Hayes is not merely a handsome young man and a popular musician, but a person who hides his own turmoil and vulnerability behind outward confidence.
But the main thing is what happens between them.
They truly managed to convey a passion you believe in!
Not just beautiful kisses or romantic embraces, but the genuine attraction of two people.
Glances, gestures, touches, brief pauses in the dialogue — everything works to create this feeling.
What is more, at times far more passes between the characters in one short scene than in some films over two hours.
That is precisely why one wants to watch their relationship, rather than simply wait for the next plot twist.
Beauty, luxury and genuine feast for the eyes
The visual side of the film deserves special praise.
“The Idea of You” is a very beautiful picture.
And it is not only about the actors.
There is room here for abundance, for luxury and for the aesthetics of a beautiful life.
Works of art, stylish interiors, art galleries, luxurious hotels, magnificent outfits, beautiful views, exquisite dishes — all of this creates a special atmosphere.
The world of art to which Solène belongs combines beautifully with Hayes's entirely different world — concerts, travel, expensive hotels and the life of an international celebrity.
The film is literally filled with beautiful details.
And what is especially pleasant is that this luxury does not look like an intrusive display of wealth.
It becomes a natural part of the story, lending the proceedings lightness, style and a special romantic appeal.
The picture is a pleasure not only to watch but simply to look at.
The film builds momentum masterfully and delicately. Director Michael Showalter does not rush, allowing the chemistry between the characters to flare up gradually, like aged wine, revealing ever new facets of their attraction. At the same time, the film generously treats the viewer to a genuine aesthetic feast: there is room here for abundance and refined luxury. Gleaming works of art, breathtaking views of California, the heroine's impeccable, stylish outfits and exquisite dishes create a tangible, almost tactile atmosphere of the celebration of life and hedonism.
“The Idea of You” is a truly passionate picture that is physically hard to tear yourself away from. It leaves behind a warm, bright aftertaste, reminding us that age, status and social prejudices are powerless before a genuine, sincere spark. Over the past year, indeed, few films have come out in which love and passion are shown so sincerely and without falseness, without dragging things out.
