The most anticipated and notable western series of 2025 has rightly become the large-scale project American Primeval ("American Primeval") from Netflix. It is one of the most striking genre releases of the year, boldly breaking viewers' stereotypes.

The film turns out to be incredibly interesting, though brutal. But there is no excess shock value here — everything strictly follows the script. The pleasant, rich staging, atmospheric music, and excellent casting are a delight. Although, to be honest, there is one nuance: the boy acts better than everyone!

I would like to say a few words separately about Preston Mota, who plays the boy Devin.

Among the adults, the dirt, the blood, the conflicts, and the general harshness, his character remains one of the most alive and emotional figures in the story. And at times it seems that it is precisely the boy who acts better than everyone. It is his eyes and emotions that convey the essence of this merciless world better than any words. And, of course, the girl. However, you can judge for yourself.

It seems to be a western, yet it resembles the familiar genre only in part. Forget the romantic stories in the spirit of "Ransom Canyon", where cowboys and farmers make eyes at each other against a backdrop of beautiful sunsets. And it is even less like the glossy westerns of the 2026 model from the universes of "Dutton Ranch", "Madison" or "Little House on the Prairie", where cowboys, villagers and even horses look altogether too "respectable."

There are no well-bred heroes here. Here there is nothing but fights, wars and the struggle for every scrap of land. The action unfolds as if in another universe. And, strangely enough, it is precisely this feeling of an "alien world" that saves the viewer from excessive shock at the cruelty. It is here, and there is plenty of it. But it is justified by the script and the story. It is no accident that the series' very genre is defined as a harsh and realistic drama about the struggle for survival, the clash of cultures and the ruthlessness of the American frontier.

On screen, the interests of the most diverse groups collide: here you have Indian tribes, settlers, and mercenaries — every people fights for its place under this bloody sun.

Every episode keeps you in suspense and is interesting in its own way, never letting you relax for a minute. But if you grow tired of the unrelenting cruelty and darkness, let me reassure you: the series does still offer hope. And unexpectedly, there is love at the end as well. This is not a spoiler. Rather, a small landmark: if your strength is running out, know that in the finale you will see that bright feeling too :)

"Primordial America" is a heavy but mesmerizing spectacle for those who are ready to see the underside of the conquest of the West without embellishment or romanticization.
