Jon Watts, the director of the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland, will helm the first picture of a new 'Star Wars' trilogy. This was reported by several major outlets at once, including The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline.
Watts is already familiar with the universe of 'Star Wars' — he was one of the creators of the series Skeleton Crew and directed several episodes. Now he is to make the leap to the big screen. The script for the first installment of the new trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg — a well-known producer and screenwriter of the 'X-Men' franchise, as well as one of the creators of the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
According to sources, the project is to become a continuation of the Skywalker saga and will effectively be numbered Episode X. Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, is expected to appear in the picture in one form or another. At the same time, the project's exact status is not yet final — the film has not yet received an official 'green light' from Disney, though it is considered one of the most advanced in development after Star Wars: Starfighter with Ryan Gosling (whose release is slated for May 2027).
The choice of Watts looks logical. The director has proven that he can work with major franchises while preserving humanity and lightness of storytelling. After a successful trilogy about Peter Parker and his experience on 'Star Wars' television, he looks like a reliable candidate to whom Lucasfilm is ready to entrust a new stage of the saga.
It is not yet known when filming will begin and when audiences will see the result. But it is already clear: 'Star Wars' is preparing for a new big chapter, and it will be opened by a man who previously successfully launched another superhero universe.
