Kirill Serebrennikov's historical drama, "The Disappearance of Josef Mengele," is set to premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in the Cannes Premiere section, which will be held from May 13 to 24, 2025. This marks Serebrennikov's debut in this non-competitive section, although he is a Cannes regular. The film is based on Olivier Guez's novel, "The Disappearance of Josef Mengele," and stars August Diehl as the infamous Nazi doctor who escaped justice by hiding in South America. The movie follows Mengele's fugitive years, from Paraguay to the Brazilian jungle. Serebrennikov, who faced a suspended sentence and house arrest in Russia, relocated to France in 2022. His previous works include "Tchaikovsky's Wife" and "Limonov, the Ballad of Eddie."
