Sustainable fashion: initiatives by sports brands and clubs

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Football team shirts are increasingly visible on the streets, reflecting a growing trend toward sustainability within the sport. Major sports brands and clubs are investing in recycled and recyclable materials for their kits.

The use of recycled materials in football shirts is driven by technological innovation and a commitment to sustainability. Puma expanded its RE:FIBRE textile recycling technology in 2025, using recycled materials from old garments and factory waste in all its football shirts, replacing conventional recycled polyester.

Additionally, Major League Soccer (MLS) and Adidas collaborated to create sustainable shirts from recycled materials, promoting environmental awareness. These shirts, made from plastic collected from beaches and coastal communities, were used in matches held between May 27 and 29, 2025.

These initiatives demonstrate how the world of football is concerned not only with on-field performance but also with its environmental impact. Clubs and sports brands are increasingly committed to sustainability, using their influence to change habits among their millions of followers and promote more environmentally responsible practices.
