Prada sandals: a debate about the correct borrowing of national cultural elements

Edited by: Екатерина С.

During Milan Fashion Week in June 2025, Prada presented its Spring/Summer 2026 men's collection, which included leather sandals reminiscent of Indian Kolhapuri chappals. These handcrafted sandals, originating from Kolhapur, India, are known for their braided design and cultural significance.

The lack of acknowledgment of the sandals' Indian heritage in Prada's show notes led to criticism from Indian artisans, lawmakers, and the public. Accusations of cultural appropriation were leveled against the brand for not crediting the original creators.

In response, Prada's head of corporate social responsibility, Lorenzo Bertelli, admitted the inspiration from traditional Indian craftsmanship. Prada has expressed a willingness to engage with Indian artisans, and the sandals' commercialization remains uncertain. This incident highlights the increasing use of Indian cultural elements in global fashion and the importance of respecting indigenous artistry.
