Astronomers have captured the deepest and highest-resolution images of radio galaxies within the galaxy cluster Abell 2255 using the European Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) radio telescope.
The observations, conducted at 144 MHz with VLBI mode, revealed intricate filamentary structures extending up to 360,000 light-years, significantly wider than the Milky Way.
These filaments, originating from radio galaxies, offer insights into particle acceleration and magnetic properties within the intracluster medium. The research, published on May 19, 2025, in Astronomy & Astrophysics, highlights the power of modern interferometers in studying these structures.
