The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile has detected 2,104 previously unseen asteroids during a ten-hour observation. Seven of these are classified as Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), though none pose an immediate threat.
The observation also identified 11 Jupiter Trojans and 9 trans-Neptunian objects. This highlights the observatory's ability to rapidly map the sky, significantly contributing to our understanding of the Solar System.
The Rubin Observatory, with its 3,200-megapixel camera, is a major international project. It is considered the largest astronomical endeavor since the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope in 2021. The observatory's ten-year mission promises to revolutionize our knowledge of the cosmos.
