Spain's Lleida Region Devastated by Sixth-Generation Wildfires

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

In 2025, the Lleida region of Spain was severely impacted by wildfires, specifically in the areas of Torrefeta i Florejacs and Sanaüja. These fires destroyed 6,500 hectares of agricultural land, grassland, and forest.

The blazes, fueled by winds reaching 120 km/h, were among the fastest recorded in Europe, with a smoke plume reaching 14 kilometers in height. Tragically, two farm buildings were destroyed, and two individuals lost their lives while attempting to escape the fire.

Authorities have identified these as "sixth-generation fires," a term used for intense, unpredictable wildfires that are difficult to extinguish with conventional methods, often linked to the climate crisis. Approximately 20,000 people in the area were advised to remain indoors as firefighters worked to contain the blazes. The incidents highlight the increasing global issue of wildfires and the urgent need for more effective climate change strategies.
