Severe storms swept through Michigan late Thursday, causing widespread power outages and damage. High winds, lightning, and tornado sirens were reported across the state.
DTE Energy reported approximately 9,000 customers without power in Southeast Michigan as of Friday morning. Consumers Energy also reported outages, with the most significant impact in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek area.
At one point, over 280,000 customers across Michigan were without power. Initial damage reports included downed trees and wires across the region, with a semi-truck flipped over and a tree falling on a house in Ingham County.
Michigan has experienced a busier-than-usual tornado season in 2025, exceeding the annual average of 16 tornadoes reported earlier in the year. The National Weather Service is conducting surveys to assess the extent of the damage.
