Northern Morocco has been grappling with a series of wildfires in recent days, exacerbated by an exceptional heatwave and strong winds. The fires have ravaged over 110 hectares of vegetation across several provinces, including Tangier, Tetouan, and Larache.
The initial blaze erupted in the Houara forest near Tangier, consuming more than 85 hectares. Another fire in the Wadras region of Tetouan destroyed nearly 20 hectares of pine and wild vegetation, posing a threat to nearby residential areas. Two additional fires were recorded in the Larache province.
Over 500 personnel from various emergency services were deployed to combat the blazes, supported by aerial assistance from Royal Air Force Canadair aircraft. The National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) has allocated a budget of 160 million dirhams for the summer season to bolster prevention and intervention efforts.
