A major wildfire erupted in coastal areas east of Athens, Greece, on June 26, 2025, causing damage and prompting evacuations. The fire started in Palaia Fokaia and Thymari, approximately 50 kilometers from Athens. Strong winds and temperatures reaching 35-37°C fueled the blaze, which firefighters are battling with air support.
The situation is further complicated by an ongoing heatwave. Authorities have issued warnings and urged residents to follow safety instructions. Another fire on the island of Chios has already destroyed over 6,000 hectares, with a state of emergency declared. A woman has been arrested in connection to the Chios fire.
The first heatwave of the summer is expected to last until the weekend, with temperatures potentially reaching 42°C. The wider Athens area is on high alert for wildfires. The Greek government has increased the number of firefighters to a record 18,000 this year in anticipation of a challenging fire season.
