China Grapples With Unprecedented Flooding After Intense Rainfall

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Hunan Province in central China is experiencing severe flooding due to unprecedented rainfall in June 2025. The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) issued red alerts, the highest warning level, for Hunan and several other regions.

The Lishui River in Hunan exceeded safety levels by over two meters, leading to the most significant flooding since 1998. Approximately 53,000 residents have been evacuated from high-risk areas.

The CMA has warned of a significant threat of mountain flood disasters in southern and central China. This extreme weather follows a series of incidents, including record heatwaves. The CMA attributes these events to climate change, impacting flood defenses and the agricultural sector.
