Wildfires force evacuations in central Israel amid heatwave

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

Israeli authorities evacuated residents from several central towns on Wednesday due to widespread wildfires. The fires were ignited by soaring temperatures and strong winds. Route 38, a major highway, was closed as flames spread near Beit Shemesh.

The National Fire and Rescue Authority reported that dozens of firefighting teams, supported by aircraft, are battling the blaze. The situation remains challenging due to the extreme weather conditions. No injuries or property damage have been reported thus far.

The Israel Meteorological Service had issued warnings about the harsh weather conditions. Potential record-breaking temperatures are exacerbating the fire risk. Social media footage showed residents walking along highways surrounded by heavy smoke.
