Guatemala's Fuego Volcano Erupts Massively on March 10, 2025, Triggering Orange Alert

Guatemalan authorities issued an orange alert on March 10, 2025, following a significant eruption of the Fuego volcano. Civil protection officials reported the volcano entered a phase of "massive eruption," leading to pyroclastic flows in nearby communities.

These flows are currently weak to moderate but have the potential to intensify. The eruption has also caused volcanic ash to reach a height of 7,000 meters above sea level, spreading up to 50 kilometers northwest, west, and southwest.

The departments of Escuintla and Sacatepéquez are most likely to be affected by ashfall. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) has declared an institutional orange alert, ensuring constant communication with local mayors and governors to coordinate prevention and response efforts.

Fuego, located 35 kilometers from the capital, is among Guatemala's most active volcanoes; a major eruption in June 2018 resulted in over 400 fatalities.
