Since December 23, Kilauea volcano in Hawaii has been experiencing an on-and-off eruption. On December 26, lava fountains reached heights of 600 feet (180 meters). The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that the fountains decreased to between 250 and 300 feet (80-90 meters) later that night. A webcam showed continuing bursts of lava and smoke.
The eruption, occurring at the summit crater, has not threatened residential areas, and visitors are observing the activity within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Fountaining episodes have varied in duration, with pauses ranging from less than a day to nearly two weeks.
