Multiple wildfires erupted in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, on February 26, 2025, causing significant damage.
At least 84 homes, including the city's Information Building, were either burned or damaged. Over 600 hectares of forest have been consumed by the blaze. Authorities issued evacuation orders for 2,060 residents from 850 households in Ayasato and Sanriku towns, and 54 people from 23 households in Akasaki town.
Temporary evacuation centers were established in schools and community centers. Approximately 27 helicopters and numerous fire trucks are involved in firefighting efforts. Power outages affected at least 500 households in Ofunato. Schools were temporarily closed for safety. The government established a liaison office to assess the situation. Iwate Prefecture applied the Disaster Relief Act to Ofunato City.
