Global Heat Records Shattered in May 2025: Texas, Central Asia, and Africa Sizzle

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Extreme heatwaves are impacting regions worldwide in May 2025, with several countries experiencing record-breaking temperatures. These events highlight the ongoing trend of global warming and the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves.

Texas Experiences Early-Season Heatwave

Texas is facing an unusual heatwave with temperatures soaring to 40-41 degrees Celsius, and forecasts predicting up to 46 degrees Celsius in the Rio Grande Valley. Camp Mabry broke a 100-year-old daily heat record on May 15, reaching 37.2°C (99°F). San Antonio hit 100 degrees for the first time this year on May 13, breaking a 58-year record.

Central Asia Grapples with Intense Heat

Countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan are also experiencing extreme heat. Nighttime temperatures in Zarafshon, Uzbekistan, reached a minimum of 30 degrees Celsius. Uzbekistan is forecast to experience one of the strongest May heatwaves in recorded history between May 14 and 17, with temperatures potentially reaching 45°C.

Africa Records High Temperatures

Africa is also experiencing extreme heat, with Algeria recording a new May record of 47.2 degrees Celsius. Chad and Niger recorded temperatures of 47 and 46.8 degrees Celsius respectively. A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected over the Richtersveld municipality of the Northern Cape in South Africa until May 17.

These extreme temperatures underscore the growing impact of climate change, making natural adaptation more difficult. Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels exacerbate the situation, indicating further warming is expected.
